Ralli Quilts are layers of discarded cloth held together with a running stitch, the final complete work used as a decorative covering for beds and/or floors. Though one side is composed as a decorative covering, its often the ‘backside’ that is equally or more fascinating as an abstract composition.
This particular Ralli Quilt is unusual for its backside composition and should be considered reversible for display. The solid black field with asymmetrical green panel beautifully shows off the intricate stitched patterns. The consciously ‘front’ side consists of a central panel of ‘Bandhani’ resist dye patterns with surrounding borders. Note splicing of central panels to create a unified effect.
