WOMAN’S DOWRY SHAWL  # 1064-501 $3,500.

83 x 55”    (211 x 140cm)
India/Pakistan, Sindh Province; c. early 19th century
Cotton, Silk floss thread
condition: good – slight discolorations

This fascinating embroidered artwork is more than what immediately meets the eye- sure, its beautiful and rhythmic field of interspersed flowering shrubs, centralized star motif and intricate border patterning of abstracted fruit forms intrigues on and on. The coloring extremely elegant: black, cherry, olive. Nonetheless, for the ‘everyday art’ connoisseurs please note the two asymmetrical base cloth panels with original ink stamp markings, describing the original cotton bolt cloth purchase with associative excise taxes and serial numbers. In addition to the embroiderer(s), can we consider the business administration markings maker as artisan too ?
